A Casa Jose Saramago in Tias

«A house made of books», that’s how Jose Saramago called the home where he spend the last 18 years of his life.

The house is divided in two parts: one for the family Saramago-del Rio, and the other part for the Perez-Figares-del Rio family, who worked close together on this architectional and cultural project.
You enter in the small patio that divides the house in two different buildings and commune zones. In front you find the entrance of Jose Saramago’s house.

Fans of the Portuguese Nobel Prize winner can visit the author’s library and house in Lanzarote, where he spend the last 18 years of his life, and what he called » a house made of books».
It is necesary to make a reservation, and only small groups are admitted.

A Casa Jose Saramago in Tias

Jose Saramago was son and grandson of farmers and born in Azinhaga, province of Ribatejo, 16th November 1922. His parents emigrated to Lisbon when he was only 2 years old, here he spend most time of his life.

During many years he was member of the Portuguese Author’s Asociation and since 1976 he worked first as book translator, later as author. In February 1993 he decided to spend part of the year in Lanzarote and married Pilar del Rio.

He died the 18th of June 2010 in his house in Lanzarote.

Visiting hours: daily, except sundays and holidays 10 – 14.30 hrs. Guided tour every 30 minutes, the last one at 13.30. Includes the reception room and house, library and garden. Price 8 Euro adults (12 years and older), Lanzarote residents 2 Euro. It is allowed to make photos and videos.

It takes 9 minutes by car to get from the Apartments La Tegala to Casa Jose Saramago, via road LZ505. If you prefer a walk, you have to follow the Camino de la Cañada, it is approximate 3,2 km and will take 48 minutes.
