Cactus Garden Lanzarote
The Jardín de Cactus is a magnificent example of an architectonic intervention integrated into the landscape. César Manrique created this audacious architectonic complex whilst maintaining the unshakeable pairing of art and nature that is so tangable in all his interventions. The garden is located in the middle of an agricultural landscape, the heart of the island’s cochineal cultivation.
The interior structure is circular, a possible metaphor fotr the island’s volcanic craters. A doble staircase opens at our feet, inviting us to walk the stone paths and stairs that connect the various landscaped areas in the interior. In the 5000 square metres there are over 7.200 examples of over 1100 different species, originating from such distant lands as Peru, Mexico, Chile, USA, Kenya,Tanzania, Madagaskar, Morocco and the Canary Islands themselves.
